gold buffalos in PVC sheets

The US Mint has admitted that the 1 oz gold Buffalos shipped in plastic sheets do contain PVC. They originally said the plastic was "inert" or something like that.

don't believe that BS from the mint.

PVC turns coins green and deposits a slimy film. I don't know if it will do anything to 24K gold ... Actually, I've never heard of anyone storing gold coins in a sandwich bag, but I've seen a lot of silver and nickel coins with the green filmy coating after several years in a baggy.

I advise to get rid of the PVC plastic and get some air-tites.

The proofs are not in PVC.

Thanks. I had already done this but for different reasons. Two of my bullion coins the plastic sheet was already broken at the edge.

Good info. The mint should ship them in something better like the austrailians.

Gold, which is chemically inert, reacting with poly vinyl chloride, which is also chemically inert? PVC doesn't react with much, which is why you bury pipe made with it and run various solutions through it for many decades and expect it to be unchanged.

Baggies aren't PVC.

Oh well, this sounds like an excellent excuse to take my GB Buffalos out of those nasty plastic packs like I wanted to do anyway.

I don't know if it was PVC or not, but I had some Krands that were put back in plastic sleeves for about 15 years.

They got a minor funky haze on them.

Cleaned off relatively easily with a soft cloth and midl soap and water.

But why bother? take em out of something that is likely to be a hassle.

After doing a little more research, I found it is not the PVC that damages the coins, it is the plasticizers that make the PVC soft and pliable. Your PVC drain pipe doesn't have the plasticizers.
